Fresh Produce on a Budget: A Shopper's Playbook

March 8, 2025 · 6 min read

Fresh produce is one of the first things to disappear from grocery carts when budgets tighten, which is unfortunate because vegetables and fruits are among the most powerful tools we have for staying healthy and feeling good.

Frozen produce is nutritionally equivalent to fresh, often cheaper, and never spoils on the counter. A bag of frozen broccoli costs less than a fresh head and provides three or four servings.

Buy seasonally. In Wisconsin, that means root vegetables, squash, apples, and cabbage are inexpensive in fall and winter, while berries, sweet corn, and tomatoes are cheapest in summer. Plan menus around what is in season.

Visit farmer's markets near closing time. Vendors often discount the day's remaining produce rather than transport it home. Cash and a friendly conversation go a long way.

And finally, visit the pantry. Our fresh produce section is always free and always open to anyone who walks in.
