Kids' Nutrition During the School Year: A Parent's Guide

August 8, 2025 · 6 min read

Children's brains do extraordinary work during the school day, and the food they eat before and during school directly affects their ability to focus, regulate emotions, and remember what they learn. A protein-rich breakfast and a balanced lunch make a measurable difference in classroom performance.

Aim for a breakfast that includes some protein and fiber: eggs and toast, oatmeal with peanut butter, yogurt with fruit and granola. Pure sugar breakfasts spike blood sugar and lead to mid-morning crashes that teachers know all too well.

Lunch does not have to be elaborate. A sandwich on whole grain bread, a piece of fruit, baby carrots or cucumber slices, and a small treat is a complete meal. Involving children in packing their own lunches dramatically increases the chance the food actually gets eaten.

Our Weekend Backpack Program supports kids who depend on school meals during the week and may not have enough at home on weekends. If you know a family who could benefit, please reach out. Every child deserves to start Monday morning ready to learn.
