Planning a Thanksgiving Meal on a Tight Budget

May 22, 2025 · 7 min read

Thanksgiving is a moment when many families feel pressure to put on a big meal, and that pressure can be heavy when money is tight. The good news is that the traditional Thanksgiving menu is built almost entirely from inexpensive ingredients.

A turkey breast or whole chicken often costs less per pound than ground beef and feeds a crowd. Pair it with mashed potatoes, stuffing made from day-old bread, a green vegetable, and a simple pie, and you have a feast that any grandmother would be proud of.

Our Holiday Meals program distributes turkeys, sides, and dessert ingredients to hundreds of local families each November. Sign-ups open in early October. There is no income requirement and no documentation needed beyond a name and number of family members.

However your table comes together this year, we hope it is full of warmth. And if it needs a little help to get there, that is exactly what we are here for.
