Inside the Weekend Backpack Program

January 15, 2025 · 5 min read

For many kids in our community, breakfast and lunch at school are the most reliable meals of the week. What happens on weekends, when school meals are not available, has been a quiet crisis for decades.

Our Weekend Backpack Program partners with local elementary schools to send home a discreet bag of nutritious, kid-friendly food every Friday afternoon. Each bag contains breakfast items, lunch items, snacks, and shelf-stable milk for two days.

Teachers and counselors identify children who would benefit, and the program is intentionally invisible to other students. The bags go into backpacks at the end of the day without ceremony or attention.

It costs roughly seven dollars to fill one bag for one weekend. A monthly donation of thirty dollars feeds one child every weekend of the school year.
