Visiting a Food Pantry for the First Time: What to Expect

February 24, 2025 · 5 min read

The first visit to a food pantry is usually the hardest. People wait too long, sometimes for months, because they are not sure what to expect or whether they will be judged. We want to make sure no one waits.

When you arrive, you will be greeted by a volunteer who will ask for your name and the number of people in your household. You do not need to share your income, your situation, or anything you do not want to share. You will not be asked to prove that you 'need' help.

You will be shown to the shopping area, where you can choose the items that fit your household's tastes and dietary needs. We try to offer real choice rather than handing out pre-packed bags, because dignity matters as much as calories.

Bring reusable bags if you have them. We will provide bags or boxes if you do not. The whole visit usually takes fifteen to thirty minutes.

If something about the process feels overwhelming, call ahead. We will walk you through it and answer every question. You are welcome here.
